Exploration
Railroads played a major role in the exploration and development of South Florida and the Everglades in the 1890s and early decades of the 20th Century. James E. Ingraham was a businessman and entrepreneur who moved to Florida in 1874 and spent most of his career working in Florida for the railroad tycoons, Henry Flagler and Henry Plant. As part of his work for the Plant railroad, Ingraham conducted an exploration survey through the Everglades from Ft. Myers to Miami in 1892. Surveys such as those made by Ingraham and other railroad employees demonstrated the strong interest in developing land in the Everglades. The Ingraham Papers (1854-1920) include correspondence, photographs, and miscellaneous materials pertaining to Ingraham's activities in the Everglades. Of particular interest is Ingraham's diary of the 1892 exploration trip through the Everglades, as well as documents regarding the expansion of the Flagler and Plant railroads in South Florida. | |
